How connected records help you check the numbers
A useful result can be traced to the work behind it. This page explains a practical review method and the limits of what a difference tells you.
Compare like with like
Select the same store and time period. For a cash close, compare the recorded expected cash with the amount actually counted, accounting for the cash movements included in that period. A difference identifies something to investigate; it does not establish the cause.
Follow the source records
For inventory, review the opening count, receipts, sales, transfers and adjustments relevant to the item. Check units, timing and unrecorded work before attributing a difference to waste or misconduct. Storebase connects these work areas so the supporting records can be reviewed in context.
Keep estimates separate from facts
A physical count is an observation. A stock estimate depends on the accuracy of recorded movements. Future demand depends on assumptions and can change. Review the input, period and exceptions before acting on an estimate. Statistical patterns alone are not proof of theft or a guarantee of future sales.
